FUNZI Island is located in the shallow coastal waters of the Indian Ocean , about 20 mins by motor boat from Bodo Harbour .
The island is abt 2,700 ha large and has 2 villages on it . The larger one is called Funzi Village and is home to abt 1,200 people , approx. 65 % of which are younger than 18.
The inhabitants of the island , as well as the people living in Bodo , call themselves “Shirazi” , presumably in order to emphasize that their genetic roots go back to the Persian traders who have been visiting the East African coast regularly for several thousand years, with some of them establishing permanent residence and inter-marrying with local people ..
